I know you have all tried to compile mdk3 ob ubuntu and have failed miserably. When ever you try to run make command, it shows all sorts of errors.
First of make sure gcc-4.2 is installed.
To do that type sudo apt-get gcc-4.2 in terminal window.
Now extract the contents in folder name mdk3 and open up terminal and follow the given steps:-
* cd mdk3/osdep
* nano common.mak
* find line
CC = $(TOOL_PREFIX)gcc
and change it to
CC = $(TOOL_PREFIX)gcc-4.2
* press ctrl+x and press y and then enter
* cd ..
* make
* make install

I have shit loads of repo's...medibuntu as well...and there is no "gcc-4.2" in the repo's.
I have "gcc-4.4" installed by default.
I can't believe you have devoted a whole web page to this 2 step solution...and you can't even get 2 steps right!
I'll tell you a secret...nobody knows this but me, and now you will...
You are using ABSOLUTE package names (gcc-4.2)...which, due to frequent updates, may become obsolete before you even posted this solution on the net.
To solve this, if you indeed have, you should state the logic behind the solution so that others will be able to think for themselves, and adapt to changes.
For example...Make sure you have the LATEST "gcc-x.x" version installed via Synaptic Package Manager.
Just like winzip, rar, 7z...I have the highest version of "gcc" installed, higher than what you require of me, and it should be backwards compatible with all lesser versions.
But if ONLY VERSION 4.2 will solve it, then you should state why you are using ABSOLUTE package names...for example...You must have the "gcc-4.2" version installed even if you already have a higher version, because it was compiled with that version...this way we know we need to keep looking for that version.
Because I only have versions 4.1 4.3 4.4 in my repo's...and it looks a little suspicious that 4.2 would have to be the only one omitted out of all those versions, and you say I should use that versions and do not mention if a higher version would suffice.
Being as I can't sudo apt-get install gcc-4.2 (which just blows your solution out of the water - hint...you should make a web page for the solution of 'sudo apt-get install gcc-4.2' now...) it makes me think that it is not dependent on that version.
Why would Ubuntu cripple their OS by disallowing access to a version which would be required by many programs compiled with 4.2?
In the off-time, when you're not finding solutions in Ubuntu, you're sniffing glue. Question is...is it expensive glue, or that cheap shit!
The only problem is that i can't change permissions for usr/local/sbin and its denying permission to create some file there. I briefly looked at some of your code trying to figure out if it was possible to just change the location but no real luck. Ideas?
Type "sudo make install"
this way the issue of permission denied will be solved.
just gedit makefile
change line LINKFLAGS = -lpthread to
LINKFLAGS = -pthread
then make
and make install
editing Makefile like hdaf said worked for me. Thanks hdaf, you're the man :)
I am sure most of you already know it, but if you cant sudo apt... gcc-4.3 or 4.4. you should try sudo apt-get install gcc-4. this will install everything you need.
If you already know it or have a better way. Don't break my comment down. this is just for the noobs (like me :) ) who are new to this.

It looks like everything worked for me without following the instructions above. I'm using gcc-4.8 I did change the common.mak file to use gcc-4.8.
also I had to apt-get install g++
this solved my issue.
